Challenge

Level One :

What is a wiki? What is it used for?

Where does the word wiki come from? Why does this meaning apply to the way it is used and applied?

Wiki is a dynamic site where all the visitors can edit the different pages of this site, and add content as on an internet forum. It is used for the work in group, the collaborative work, and use the knowledge of the world to complete the web site. Wikipedia.org is a wiki’s web site.

In essence, the wiki is merely a vast simplification of the process of creating HTML pages, and thus is an effective way to exchange information through collaborative effort.

The name wiki come from Hawaiian language “wiki wiki” who’s mean “fast”. There is a relation because with a wiki web site we can edit a web site very faster.

Level Two:

What is the best known application of wiki on the internet?

www.wikipedia.org Is the best example of the success of the wiki system.

Do you use it, when and how?

I use it, to find some definition. But some times it isn’t the good definition. We must use wkipédia with others resources.

Why is it helpful to you?

It’s fast to find any answers.

Why does it have such a strong international impact? What is inherent in it that makes international diffusion faster?

There is an international impact with this technology because it is the dream of internet: All it’s possible, all it’s free and we can speak with everybody all over the world. With the wiki, everybody can give its meaning, point of view. It is no need to create a web site, host it and promote it.

On an other hand there is the concept of the community which is very present on the web. With the wiki we have the imagination that we are on a community … the community of the knowledge!

Level Three

Choose a subject from this application and propose an edit for a page and subject that you are familiar with. Do not vandalize the actual page, but suggest a real edit. Explain what subject you would like to edit and post your discussion of that edit on your blog. For this level, the words and page that you propose to edit can be from the French edition.

If i decide to post on wikipedia, i will choose a subject that i know very well. Like "l'AS Monaco", or like the cinema. Why not write a critic about the last movie i have seen : "3 enterrements".

Level Four:

What new use of a wiki could propose? How would you apply this to a learning situation, for example?

It could be interesting to create a wiki web site for the journalists. All of them could write on every subject on the world without any political or economical pressures. It could be called : The WikiWorldPaper.

Level Five:

Find another application that exists on the web other than the popular one mentioned in level two.

http://wikira.bbclone.de/ This web site proposes to write book. Everybody can add his content and make a chapter of the novel.

A digital PVR also brings new possibilities for time shifting, as it is possible to start watching the recorded show from the beginning even if the recording is not yet complete.

The 23th november 2005

What is an FTP server and why is it useful? What are some of the activities you can do with it? Do you have one available for you, and which one is it? If you don't have one, why don't you get one?

An FTP server is a space on the web. It’s use to host website, and some files. If you want create a website you must have a server on the web to host it. Most of the time this service is paying, but you can have lots of options : a big space (2Go), many e-mail addresses, a domain name like “.com”, “.org” or “.info”, and the most important the manage of different languages : php, perl, python, ssi …

This space could be use too, to share some files, like an USB key, but with all over the world.

I have it but, I can’t use it at the moment because of some technical problems.

Our class has a special approach to interactivity. It is not possible to have the same interaction of a normal class, but it offers several new ways of interacting. What are these? What are the ways that are especially interesting to you? How could they work better? What technical solutions can you suggest?

The new ways of interacting are that we can share some of point of mined on the same time with the common window. But it’s really difficult to follow the conversation on the common window, and understand what the teacher speaks about, work about the lesson, find some example of the subject, etc …

But this is a new way of learning, and we can do many things one the same time.

Prepare one question about the last class: what did you not understand? What would like to have more information on and why? What question did our discussion cause you to ask?

I am not sure to understand how you want, mister Bob, host the podcast. Because by the way you show, we must record our voice by the phone. And I am not really agree with it. I think it’s better to use software like “audacity” and host the mp3 on a FTP server.
